The plan for a children’s park on the Parade Ground should be discouraged, as should (rumoured) landscaping of the Parade Ground by the Danish Tranquebar Association. Such, rarely used, playgrounds exist in Karaikal and Poompuhar, and Tranquebar would probably loose much of it’s attractiveness and serenity by competing with these destinations.

Planning for town preservation should be carried out by a team of competent historians, architects and engineers, and not be left to less competent planners.

18.       TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND BANKING

Findings

There is a Bank of India on the trader's street outside the Town Gate, but no ATMs. ATMs can be found in Karaikal 11 kilometres to the south. ATMs in Karaikal accept Visa and Master cards, but not Amex or Diners.

There is a very small internet café on the traders street, but reception is very poor. Good reception can be had in Porayar and excellent reception in Karaikal.

Recommendations

No recommendations. The Bungalow on the Beach Hotel has an internet connection which may be lent by guests. Probably a guest internet facility should be installed.

19.       POST OFFICE

Findings

The Tranquebar Post Office is situated in Old Tranquebar next to the Parade Ground opposite the Bungalow on the Beach Hotel garden. The Post Office has become quite dilapidated in later years and is in need of a new coat of paint. The Office has a beautiful traditional large red drum mail box.
